Everyone loves an intriguing story, a narrative of your own creating. Enjoy transforming textile surfaces such as paper, and fabrics, old* and new, with your own unique symbols and marks using acrylic paints, drawing and printmaking inks, crayons, and oil pastels, explore **paper dry point etching and mono printing from natural and hand cut stencils, create patterns using simple printing blocks. Finally, combine your papers and textiles to create a unique artist’s book.
An integral part of this workshop will be to explore the narratives and sense of place within your works.
*Used textiles contain their own history and energy, as you intertwine old with new you create another layer of history, with an alternate story, a new narrative.
A dry point paper plate is a thin piece of cardboard; one side has a smooth white surface.
*** “Artists’ Books: not books about art: not books about artists: not even books illustrated by artists (although they can be). Artists’ Books are artworks that use the form or the concept of a book. Free from the constraints of traditional publishing, they are about nothing so much as themselves.” – Helen Cole, State Library Queensland
Suitable for beginners to advanced printmakers.
8.30am Start – 3.30pm Finish
Bring your lunch. Coffee, tea, etc. provided.
Day One
Explore the art form of artist’s books* through a hands-on experience with a selection of Peta’s artists books. Themes and structures, materials, and tools will be explored and discussed.
Be guided by Peta to create a suite of sample book forms: one sheet folded books – caterpillar and magic books, concertina book, scroll book and Japanese side bound book.
Dive into creating background surfaces for your papers and textiles, such as staining, using resists, and stamping from your own unique handheld block. Your dry point paper plate etchings combined with mono printing, will be printed over these backgrounds.
You will create your dry point etchings using the humble printmakers paper plate as well as Tetra Pac and suitable cardboard packaging.
Your etchings will contain fine delicate lines and bold tonal areas. You will experiment with creating marks and texture using a variety of tools such as: cutting knifes, etching needles, awls, wire brushes, sandpaper and even a ballpoint pen! You will be guided through the techniques of cutting into the surface of the plate and peeling away the top layer. Textured and smooth tapes can be applied to create further lines and textures.
You will learn how to ink and print the plates as intaglio prints using an etching press.
Day Two
On the second day, you will complete your printing in first part of the morning, leaving the remainder of the day to combine your Prints, papers, and textiles to create an artist’s book, these will be folded, stitched, and collaged together in the
structure of your choice. Found objects may also be incorporated within your artist’s book.
